In the Name of the Lord–Outside!

“In the Name of the Lord–Outside!” That’s what he yelled. And that’s the way it stayed.

Roving around Liberia can be tiring especially when you are in a truck for about eight hours on some of the bumpiest roads on earth. When I finally saw the sign that said “First Century Mission Children’s Home”, I knew good things were in store. First of all, I finally got to get out of the truck. Secondly, I saw children with smiling faces running at me. I was where I belonged.

These children were poor. I mean really poor. Their orphanage in Croezerville was rather ramshackled but sitting in a lush jungle like you could only dream of experiencing. And like most children of extreme poverty that I have met, they were extremely happy. I don’t have a total explanation for that–but if I could figure it out–I’m sure it would be profound.

Our Christian Relief Fund orphanage in Croezerville is managed by MacAnthony Siaker. He is a man full of life and the Lord. He thanked me over and over again for the work CRF had done there.

MacAnthony thanked me especially for saving the children. Naturally, I thought he meant saving them by giving them food and shelter. Then I thought he meant saving them spiritually. But his thoughts were going a very different direction.

He showed me the huge walls that surrounded our orphanage, and told me that not one child was taken from them. And not one rebel entered the compound.

Then I knew what he was telling me. He was telling me about the war. These were the same kind of rebels that you saw in the movie, “Blood Diamond.” These were the same rebels in Liberia that you saw on the screen in Sierra Leone who cut people’s arms off and kidnapped children to make them become child soldiers and terrorists.

One day the rebels did come. They were outside the walls ready to attack. MacAnthony yelled out at them, “In the Name of the Lord–Outside!” And that is exactly where they remained. He added, “We have Americans from CRF who are supporting us!” He thought the Lord and CRF were pretty good partners to have on his side. It looks like he was correct. They left. And not one child was taken. Not one rebel came inside.

Children need to be saved in a lot of ways. One way is to have a place that is secure. I’m glad our kids there found a place of safety. I’m glad we could give that. There are powers greater than terrorists. And I dream of a day when children don’t have to beĀ in these places of fear. Isaiah said that one day people will not “bear children doomed to misfortune.” I like that.
